Meet the newest addition to my cat portrait series, and easily the most well-dressed one yet. She's wearing full Zeeuwse klederdracht, gold oorijzer, coral beads, lace cap and all, with the kind of composure that suggests she's always known she was the main character.
This dress hasn't been worn in daily life for generations, but it still shows up in old photographs and in the way people talk about their grandmothers. I grew up surrounded by that history without really thinking about it, and now, for reasons I can't fully explain, I'm painting it onto cats. She takes it more seriously than I do.
Every piece of gold jewelry and every fold of lace was built up slowly, layer by layer, oil paint style. She was worth the patience.
